Greater Alabama Council's 25th Anniversary

As December crept closer into view in 1997, excitement began to grow across North and Central Alabama.  Soon, the Choccolocco Area Council, the Central Alabama Council, and the Tennessee Valley Council would formally merge to create the Greater Alabama Council.

With an effective Charter date of January 1, 1998, the Greater Alabama Council is celebrating twenty-five years of adventure, service, and developing young people to become the citizens our nation needs.  We invite you to join us this year as we mark a quarter century of Scouting in north and central Alabama.

Celebrating 25 Years of Adventure

On November 11, 2023, the Greater Alabama Council hosted its 25th Anniversary Banquet and Night of Honor at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.  The evening featured recognition of youth and Adult Religious Award recipients, the presentation of the 2023 Silver Beaver Class of the Greater Alabama Council, the presentation of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award, recognition of the Glen and Miranda Adams Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year, recognition of members of the Eagle Scout Class of 2023 in attendance, and the presentation of the members of the Eagle Scout Class of 2022.

The evening’s main attraction was the keynote address provided by LTG Daniel Karbler, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, headquartered at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.  In his message, General Karbler encouraged Scouts to learn from their mentors, teachers, and Scoutmasters and take those lessons to heart.  Those lessons, along with faith and determination, will strengthen them to be strong and resilient.

In addition to General Karbler’s message and the awards and presentations, banquet guests were able to enjoy a brief look back over 25 years of the Council’s history as well as see a camp promotion video from 2006 encouraging Scouts to point their compasses towards the Camps of the Greater Alabama Council.

In closing, Scout Executive JT Dabbs spoke of the rich history and strong foundation of the Council and thanked those volunteers who were involved with the original merger process and are still involved today.
