Cub Scout Cast Iron Quest

June 10th, 2023
at Sloss Furnace

This is a full day of Scouting fun including a Cast-Iron activity with Iron Pour! Archery! Sling-Shots! Crafts! Field Games! and more!

WHAT IS THE CAST-IRON ACTIVITY? Each Scout will receive a single blank scratch/etching block to create their own design which will become a cast-iron sculpture. A scratch/etching block is a tile made of resin-bonded sand. Using small metal scratching tools, Scouts will carve a shallow-relief design into the scratch block to create a mold. After the old is complete, Scouts will watch as the professional iron pourers take melted iron and pour it into the mold. After it cools, the Scouts will be able to take their newly created cast-iron sculpture home with them.  Sloss Furnaces has also provided a practice sheet with guidelines for you to practice with!
