Alabama Sports Foundation (ASF) is Honoring Alabama Boy Scouts:
Scouts can receive a patch and be recognized!

The ASF is honoring Scouting this year in conjunction with their State Foundation Olympic Games XXXI Opening Ceremonies at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 21st, 2013 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. The games focus on teenage youth who are participating in Olympic events. All Scouts, parents, and volunteers are invited. Scouts will also be eligible to receive the special ASF Scout Patch and will be recognized by name at the event. This would be a terrific summertime pack activity or a troop outing. Please have your Scouts attend so that they can be recognized and we can support the youth athletes.

Scouts need to register to help the ASF prepare for how many Scouts to expect. You can register at
www.asffoundation.org and go to the "Honoring Our Heroes" page.

2013 BIRMINGHAM DAY CAMP AT RUFFNER MOUNTAIN NATURE PRESERVE
We would personally like to send out a "BIG THANK YOU" to the day camp director, volunteers and staff for a job well done. And a special THANK YOU to all of the den walkers. I can't thank you all enough! You sincerely made the camp that much more enjoyable and my hat's off to all of you. All scouts received a very nice patch and cerificate along with an unforgettable experience! It was super heroes all around for fun and adventure. Day Camp was held at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve with the third day being a day of swimming at East Pinson Recreation Center. This year we took on a heroes theme, complete with Super heroes characters that brought excitement to all the Cub Scout. UAB Football Coach Garrick McGee, came out to teach our cub scout about respect, listening and accomplish goals in life. The BB and Archery ranges were among the stations where the boys had the opportunity to earn belt loop and pin for both. Wednesday was ‘POOL DAY’ filled with fun and games! The rain came on Friday, it tried to put a damper on our fun, but no way! We endured the obstacle and made the best of it, and persevered – accomplishing everything we set out to do with minimal delays. During the week the Cub Scout completed a service project. See article below by Deborah Huff.

BIRMINGHAM DISTRICT CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP 2013 SERVICE PROJECT
The Birmingham District Cub Scout Day Camp was held at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center during the week of June 3-7, 2013. For the Day Camp Service Project, the Cub Scouts agreed to Adopt-An-Animal at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. There were six animals and the Frog received the most votes. The cost for each animal is $25 so each scout was asked to donate a minimum of fifty cents. The Cub Scouts raised a total of $50 and were able to adopt a Frog and a Snake at Ruffner Mountain. The camp received a certificate and a framed photo for each animal that will be on display at the August 2013 Roundtable Meeting. Congratulations to Birmingham District Cub Scouts!

BIRMINGHAM DISTRICT SCOUTING BASKETBALL CLINIC
The Birmingham District Scouting Basketball Clinic is Friday, June 21, 2013 and Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Our Lady of Fatima School- 630 1st St. S. Birmingham, Alabama. On Friday June 21, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Basketball Coach Jerod Haase will be our guest speaker. Coach Haase played and coached at the University of Kansas before spending the past nine seasons on the staff at the University of North Carolina with Coach Roy Williams, where he helped lead the Tar Heels to national championships in 2005 and 2009. There will be guest appearances by overseas professional and collegiate basketball players. All participants will take part in a two hour skills clinic and receive a t-shirt and a regulation basketball. The basketball clinic is free. Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to update you on all the goings on in the Cheaha District. First I would like to think everyone for getting their Re-Charters in on a timely manner. We have reached growth for the month of June as a district, and are setting up to hit growth for the year as a district. So thank you all for you hard work to get everything in on time, and very limited amount of defectives. Also we had a great Day Camp this past week. 25 Cub Scouts got to have a great time and earned numerous belt loops and pins. Thank you to all of our volunteers that helped put this on, and thank you to Sandra and Robin for planning such a great event.

Also we have a good bit coming up, First is summer camp. I hope everyone is set, and ready for their camping experience this summer. Also day camp is coming up, we are set for the week of June 3rd, and the School for the Blind. Please register as soon as possible.

The Cheaha Annual Merit Badge fair sponsored by Troop 4711 will be held Saturday August 3rd. Visit meritbadge.info to find the event, or just follow this link: http://meritbadge.info/mbn/eventdetails.aspx?id=A6AE5D14-7002-41D2-B287-F2316D732D4A . We will also try to offer BALOO at this event, but we would need some one qualified to teach it, please contact me as soon as possible if you can teach the class. Sign up fast, we have a lot of out of council units attend this event, and classes will fill up quick.

Wood Badge, if you have ever been interested in earning your beads, now is the perfect chance. Wood Badge will be held at Sequoyah this fall. This is in our back yard, so it will be easier to make the trip for everyone in our district. Please visit https://1bsa.org/wood-badge-registration.php to sign up for the course, you will be glad you did it.

As for our next meetings we are set for our Program Preview, and Popcorn meetings. We realize that it might be hard for everyone to attend these since this district is so big. Having said that we are going to try something a little different. We are holding two separate meetings hosted by two different troops. The first meeting will be held August 1st at 7:00 p.m., and hosted by Troop 4130 at their Scout House, with a cook out involved. The next meeting will be heldAugust 8th at 7:00 p.m., hosted by Troop 4711, location TBD. So I hope this will make it convenient for everyone to make one of the two meetings.

The first annual 10K, 5K, one mile fun run is on the calendar forOctober 5th at camp Sequoyah. This will be a great event for us to get out in the public's eye. We expect over 200 runners, and not only will this go to support our district, this will also get the public on our property to see what we offer. We are very excited for this event, and it has endless potential not only for this year, but for the coming years. Please promote this to your units, and come out and help where ever you can. Also the race will be open to any registered Scout, adult or youth, to run in any of the races for just $10. We hope you come join us in the first one. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about the event. Check it out at:http://www.annistonrunners.com/event-calendar/?eventID=537&date=10/05/2013

Also if anyone in your troop or pack works at Walmart if you could please get them to visit the website and fill out the volunteer form, Walmart donates money to the Boy Scouts for anyone employee who volunteers. Please help us fund scouting. Also if you are employed by Honda, please do the same. We need to take advantage of these Employers wanting to fund our program. Contact me for any information you need.

Thank you all for everything that you do, and I look forward to seeing everyone out and about this summer.

• Scouting Opportunity: Quincy Whitehead, the director of the Alabama National Cemetary, has requested that I contact the BSA to see if they might consider, having the Scouts assist them in a project. The project includes removing the plants from 12- ( 9'x9') squares in the columbarium. Once the plants are removed the bark and loose dirt would be removed and the crew at the ANC would fill the squares with crushed stone. I would estimate that it would take 4-6 scouts about 3 hours to remove the plants and dirt from one of the squares. The A.N.C. will provide the tools needed for the project. They will be able to support during the week or weekend provided they are given 5-7 days notice. Mr. Whitehead can be reached at(205) 665-9039- or . If you need additional information I can be reached at (205) 665-3252 or 665-2980 . -Eddie Blake

Thank you to the Shelby Day Camp staff, Walking Den Leaders, and Scouts for making the Shelby • District Day Camp so much FUN!!! 2013 Day Camp was SUPER. During Day Camp, the Cub and Webelos scouts worked hard to collect food for the Salvation Army in Shelby County. Throughout the week, Scouts collected a total of 467 total items! Great job.

• Cub Scout Pack 533 of Birmingham spent the night of April 20living
aboard the USS Alabama in Mobile. The Pack toured the USS Alabama
battleship, the USS Drum submarine, and many other military aircraft and
ground combat vehicles, while spending the night in the same battleship
quarters used by Navy servicemen 70 years ago in World War II. The
total of 50 Cub Scouts, fathers, and grandfathers in attendance now
enjoy a better understanding and appreciation for the contributions made
by military personnel in times of conflict, where America's basic values
of liberty and freedom were threatened.

If you are interested in having a “Scouting Spotlight” in the Shelby District, please submit write-ups and pictures to Terri Gregson (tgregson@1bsa.org) by 9:00 AM on Monday mornings to be included in that week’s Digital Eagle. Thanks!

The Westmoreland Twilight Camp was a big success again this year! We had 86 Cubs attend camp this year and they had a great time. I would like to thank all of the Volunteers that came out gave their time so the Cubs could experience the program. I would also like to to thank once again Camp Director Laurel Rickard and Program Director Kristie Woodfin for all of their help this year! Great Job!

Also of note, many of our Scout Troops are preparing for trips to summer camp. Please pray for their safe travels this summer and that the Scouts will have a meaningful experience. We have Troops attending camps at Comer, Sequoyah, Skymont and Yocona.

The June Westmoreland District Roundtable will be this Thursday, June 13, 6:30PM at Florence Blvd Church of Christ, we will be meeting downstairs.

The W.C. Handy Festival is requesting help from Scouting in the Westmoreland District, here is what I have: The In
Harmony With Nature project that we have been working on with our partners, Florence Recycling, Shoals Solid Waste Authority, Keep the Shoals Beautiful and the tourism offices. The mission of the project is to encourage all sponsors of events in public spaces to have litter-free events. There are several events during the Handy Festival, which are targeted, and each has an event coordinator. This is a proposal to the Westmoreland District for assistance during the 2013 festival, which will be July 19-28.
