MESSAGE FROM THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE:

Dear Scouters;

As we near the one year anniversary of the devastating tornadoes that hit our state, I encourage you and your unit to take advantage of the SAF-T-Net program.  This program was donated to the state of Alabama by Bob Baron, President of Baron Services, who is also a board member of our Council.    I encourage you and the families you serve to sign up for this free program.  It has and will continue to save lives and might save the life of one of the families in your unit.

Sincerely,

J.T.Dabbs, III

Scout Executive

New Section for highlighting our hard working Scouts! If you or a Scout you know made news let us know!

Thought those of you involved with this year’s Athens Mayor's Prayer Breakfast would like to read the kind letter to the editor from the Elkins family. It ran in the April 29 edition of The News-Courier.

Dear Editor:

Our family would like to thank the Boy Scouts and everyone involved with the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast for giving us the Heart of an Eagle Award  in recognition of our efforts in the dangers of Meningitis to our community.  We are truly blessed to receive this honor, which would not be possible without the help and encouragement we get from each of you. This is one way that we can remember our precious Jessica and know that her life is still making a difference in this world.  She would be amazed and honored to know that so many people continue to help us get through each day.

We will treasure this award forever and continue to raise awareness to save a life so another family will not have to experience this tragedy.
Sincerely,

Talbot, Michelle Emilee and Michael Elkins

Hello, Birmingham District!

DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETING/ROUNDTABLE

Our District Committtee Meeting/Roundtable Meeting will resume this coming Thursday, May 3, 2012 beginning at 5:30pm at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. This is an opportunity to meet our new District Chairman, Marcus Lundy, and to hear about the new direction that we plan to move the Birmingham District in.

FINANCE

These are coupon cards and each card is $5 and the unit receives $2.50 back from each card. You are only responsible for paying the balance after the cards have been sold. That's 1/2 the cost of the card back to the unit. Please contact Brian Wilson if you are interested in receiving the cards. The deadline to turn in the money or unsold cards is May 18, 2012. Please visit the council website at www.1bsa.org for more details!

MEMBERSHIP
IS YOUR UNIT RE-CHARTERED?

Oh, 'tis the season! You've gotten the call and received the paperwork, now comes the hard part...Re-Chartering.

The Charter Agreement between the Organizations we serve are the driving force of the Council's ability to bring Scouting to boys and girls in our community. It is the way by which we are able to provide resources, training and professional staff to assist Scout units.

Charter fees paid by chartered organizations ensure that Scout units are covered under the Council's general liability policy in the event of an accident. Without the charter, Scouting is impossible.

The Charter renewal allows the Council to see what leaders are in place and whether they have been trained. It also gives the Council a list of youth being served by the unit with contact info that allows us to communicate directly to the youth and their parents.

If your unit has not rechartered, youth won't be able to register for District or Council events and will not be covered by the Council's liability insurance.

So, as you can see, Re-charters make the Scouting world go 'round! If you have any questions about your Charter Renewal or need assistance, please contact your district representative, Brian Wilson, immediately at (205)902-4276

The new This Week in Choccolocco is up and available to be read at the following link. http://choccolocco.1bsa.org/this-week-in-choccolocco-may-7-2012.php Please pay attention to the section dealing with Summer Camp registration and information.

A few things. Day Camp registration turn in party will be on May 10th at 6:00 p.m. at the Anniston LDS Church. Get your registration forms in and bring them that night for a turn in pizza party. This is just for the leaders to fellowship and talk about day camp and for us to get a jump on day camp applications.

If you have not turned in your charter to me, please get it to me ASAP. We are past due on about 6 of them now. Let's get them in. The Day Camp meeting on Thursday would be a great time to bring them in to me.

Registration for the Choccolocco Air Rifle Competition is also up. Registration forms for this event can be found athttp://choccolocco.1bsa.org/choccolocco-district-air-rifle-shooting-competition.php. Let's get those registration forms out to the kids and back in. I need to start getting a count on this event soon so I can begin planning to day activities. Remember, this is open to all Boy Scouts, Venturing Scouts, and Explorer Scouts in the district.

GAC Summer Camp cards have also become available. These can be pre-loaded and used at both summer camps during the summer. For more information, go to https://1bsa.org/campcard.php.

Guys, we have a lot going on. Let's continue to push it and strive to make a difference in the lives of those we touch.
