VOLUNTEER MEETING WITH SCOUT EXECUTIVE In an effort to improve communications and receive input on the direction of the council, eight meetings are planned for volunteers to visit with Scout Executive Tim Cooper on these and other topics. Tim will cover the updated plans for the council long range plans along with plans for our property development in the next few years.  These meetings are open to current registered leaders and Scouting parents. All Cubmasters, Scoutmasters and Venture Crew leaders are encouraged to share this information with your unit leaders and parents and encourage them to attend and be involved in this process.  We are expecting these meeting to be 1 ½ hours long, but the meeting will last as long as volunteers want to give input on the direction of the council. Please email or call Tommie Black, tblack@1bsa.org or 205-969-4241 to confirm your attendance.  To view the meeting(s) in your area, click here.
 
WORK DAY AT CAMP JACKSON - Saturday, March 27th, starting at 8:00 am.  The task is to build new tents.  Please bring battery-powered drills and chargers if you have them.

CUB LUAU 2010 - April 16-18 and 23-25 mark the dates for Cub Luau!  You don’t want to miss this great spring Cub activity.  An entire weekend of fun and excitement for a Cub and adult partner is only $55.00.  It will be a Polynesian paradise at Camp Comer so make plans to attend one or both sessions.  To view the flier or for more information click here.

SUMMER CAMP ON-LINE CLASS SIGN-UP - On-line class sign-up for Camps Comer and Sequoyah will begin this Friday, March 26th.  Troops must have an e-mail address to access the system. At this time we do not have e-mail addresses for the following troops:

CONGRATULATIONS-To the Diocese of Birmingham Catholic Committee on Scouting for achieving Quality Diocese status for 2009. They have received this honor every year since the NCCS began the program back in 2000!
 
GOOD TURN FOR AMERICA - For a youth member in the Greater Alabama Council to earn the Good Turn for America Award a Cub Scout must complete a service project of at least two hours and a Boy Scout or Venturer a service project of at least five hours.  Hours do not have to be consecutive.  To log the hours go to www.goodturnforamerica.org.
 
RENEW OUR RIVERS - Alabama Power is now offering a patch to any Boy Scout who participates in a Renew Our Rivers clean-up.  For more information, and a schedule of clean-ups, click here.
 
YOUTH IMPACT PLAN - During the last council anual business meeting, the board approved  the Youth Impact Plan, which sets several goals including:
          *  Doubling the number of youth served over the next five years
 
 
PHILMONT 2011 - Greater Alabama Council will send a contingent to Philmont in June of 2011.  The contingent is open to all Venturers and Boy Scouts who meet the age and height/weight requirements.  Contingent applications will be accepted for the next two weeks and will be processed beginning March 29th.  Click here for a contingent application.

LEAVE NO TRACE UPDATE - The new Boy Scout handbook adds a Leave No Trace Trainer as a position which can fulfill the leadership requirements for Star, Life and Eagle advancement.  In order to be certified as a Leave No Trace Trainer, a Scout must be over the age of 14 and have completed the 16 hour trainer course.   Click here for more information.

2010 BSA CENTENNIAL SILVER DOLLAR - On March 23, 2010, the US Mint launches the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar.  Plans call for the US Mint to begin selling the Boy Scout coins on March 23, 2010 at Noon (Eastern Time) via their website, www.usmint.gov and their toll-free number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
Introductory pricing is available at $33.95 for the uncirculated coins and $39.95 for the proof coins. After April 22, if they are still available, prices will increase to $35.95 for uncirculated coins and $43.95 for proofs.  A surcharge of $10 on the sale of each coin will be forwarded to the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation to continue its efforts in hard to reach areas.   The Supply Group has purchased a small supply of the Proof Silver Dollar, and will make them available for sale on scoutstuff.org, and at the Museum Scout Shop starting tomorrow after 12:00 noon Eastern time. National Scout Shops may place an order thru the NDC for up to 12 coins to sell, starting tomorrow. The item number is # 610501. Cost, wholesale, and retail will all be $39.95. Councils and customers wishing to purchase the coins in quantity should contact  the US Mint.
 
PINEWOOD DERBY- Do you need help conducting a Pinewood Derby Workshop for your Pack?  If so, contact John Vagner @ the Scout Shop for details & scheduling  at 205-967-5954. This is a great opportunity to have a more personalized workshop for your Cub Scouts.
 
The 2010 Greater Alabama Council Pinewood Derby is scheduled for May 8 at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover.  Weigh-In and race times will be determined closer to that date.   First through Third Place District winners by rank will be invited to participate.  Trophies will be awarded in the Tiger, Cub and Webelo Divisions for both Speed and Show categories for First through Third Place.    Look for more information in the near future.

HIGH ADVENTURE OPPORTUNITIES:
  • NORTHERN TIER - Troop 21, Bluffpark, has openings for Boy Scouts and adults for their scheduled a trip to Northern Tier, out of Bisset (includes the sea plane ride to the put in).  Departure from Birmingham will be on June 29 with return July 11, 2010.  Transportation is by Troop bus.  Individuals or a group to form a crew are welcome.  The cost is $1000, or less, at this time.   • PHILMONT - (1) A troop in Vulcan District has openings for two Scouts or Scouters.  For more information, contact Brent Pritchard at bpritchard@1bsa.org or 969-4248. (2)  Troop 368  in Huntsville has a Philmont trek 8-20 June with openings for Scouts.  Contact Jim Watson at 256-653-3659 for more information.
  • SEA BASE - The council has a Munson Island Adventure July 27th - August 2nd for four Scouts or Venturers, and 2 adults.  Cost is $ 700 plus transportation to/from Sea Base.  If interested contact Vince Lambert at vlambert@1bsa.org or 205-969-4260.
 
DAY CAMP 2010 - “ON MY HONOR”...These words mean a lot in Scouting.  This is also the theme for Day Camp 2010.  Sign up now to be part of the fun, excitement and adventure of Cub Scout Day Camp.  There will be lots of wonderful activities for Cub Scouts across the Council.  To view or download the flier and registration form, click here.
 
WOOD BADGE 2010 – There will be one opportunity for 48 adult leaders to participate in Wood Badge next year. The course will be conducted September 17-19 at Camp Comer, and October 15-17 at Camp Jackson. Cost is $200. For more information, or to request an invitation to attend, Click Here.
          
VENTURING AND EXPLORING ADVISORS: “Looking to add some excitement to your annual program?” - The Greater Alabama Council has answered many of your request and recommendations by including a total of Seven (7) fun filled events to the council’s annual program calendar for all Venturers and Explorers. If your Crew or Post would like to sign up for one or several of the events included in the attachment (Venturing / Exploring) , please complete the registration form by the due date and submit to the Charles T. Clayton Service Center located at 516 Liberty Parkway, Birmingham Alabama 35242. However, if you have additional questions or concerns or would like for one of our Executives to make a special presentation to your unit please contact Billy Curtis, Council Exploring Executive at 205-969-4277 or email wcurtis@1bsa.org. This is going to be quite an adventure, don’t miss it!
  
NATIONAL JAMBOREE - Greater Alabama Council still has openings for about 45 more Scouts who will be First Class and at least 12 but not yet 18 next summer to attend the National Jamboree celebrating 100 years of Scouting in the United States.  Check out www.bsajamboree.org for more information.
 
SUMMER CAMP 2010 :
  • Registration is now open for summer camp 2010.  Make sure your troop is part of a great summer at Camp Comer or Camp Sequoyah.  Click Here for a camp reservation form.
  • Camp Comer - Weeks 1 - 4 are at capacity. No additional registrations will be accepted for these weeks (June 6 - July 3).
  • Camp Sequoyah - Weeks 1 -  3 are at capacity. No additional registrations will be accecpted for these weeks (June 6 - June 26 ).
  • REBATE ANNOUNCED : All troops attending Camp Sequoyah weeks 4 and 5, or Camp Comer week 5 will receive a rebate of $25 per Scout in camp.  Rebate checks will be mailed by September 1st.   Troops currently registered for camp may shift their registrations to these weeks to qualify for the rebate as well.
  • REMINDER: The first payment of $ 75 per Scout was due by Friday, February 12th.  This payment is non-refundable (except in the case of serious illness, immediate family tragedy, summer school or family re-location) but transferable from one Scout to another.
  • Leaders Guides are complete, and posted on the website for each camp.
  • STAFF NEEDED: Adult staff are needed for Climbing, Aquatics, Shooting Sports and Dining Hall, and top-notch youth staff are always welcome.  Click here for a staff application.
  • On-Line Class Sign-up:  An e-mail went to the troop contact (listed on the camp reservation form) last Friday, March 19th to allow you completion of the roster of Scouts attending summer camp.  This Friday (March 26th), on-line class sign-up will begin.  The initial deposit of $ 75 per Scout must be paid to access the on-line registration site.
 
SMALLBORE CHAMPIONSHIP-  The 1st Annual  BSA / Greater Alabama Council Smallbore Championship will be held on May 8, 2010 at Brock's Gap Training Center, Inc. in Hoover, AL.  To participate, scouts must have earned their Rifle Merit Badge before the date of the event.  Equipment, firearms and ammunition will be provided.  Scouts will also have an opportunity to try their hand at shotgun shooting at the event.  For more information see the attached program or visit the "EVENTS" page of our junior club at www.scssa.orgwww.shelbyshootingsports.org
 
ALABAMA BOY SCOUT TAG -  Click Here for more information on how to get the Alabama Boy Scout Tag. To simplify the process, Greater Alabama Council can now process your request for you.  Simply go the Birmingham or Huntsville office, complete a Limited Power-of-Attorney form, and submit a copy of your current tag registration and your $ 50 payment, and the council staff will do the rest.Join us in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouts by purchasing a Boy Scout license tag. It is a great way to support the Scouting programs and your community. The proceeds from the tag will be returned to your local Boy Scout Council.
 
CUB ACTIVITY HEALTH FORMS - The new BSA Health Forms are required for all events less than 72 hours.  This includes events such as Cub Luau, Alabama Adventure, and Cub Haunted Weekends.  Sections A and C must be completed.  This does not require a visit to a healthcare provider to be completed if the event is less than 72 hours.  To obtain the Health Form, go to the forms library section of the council website (www.1bsa.org).

100TH ANNIVERSARY SERVICE PROJECT – The Greater Alabama Council is partnering with the Salvation Army Food Bank to collect canned and non-perishable food items to help the less fortunate in our community. This will be the official service project for the Council’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. The drive will begin in the fall of 2009 and end in February 2010. For more information, Click Here.
 
COUNCIL PLANS TO CONDUCT WEBELOS RESIDENT CAMP - The Greater Alabama Council is planning to conduct a Webelos Resident Camp July 11-14, 2010 at Camp Comer.  Cost is $105.00 for all Webelos and the first leader with a minimum of four Webelos is free.  All additional adults are $40.00.  All interested parties are encouraged to sign up their Webelos as well consider volunteering to be on staff.  A minimum of 85 Webelos and sufficient volunteer staff (which will be determined by the Council’s Cub Scout Committee) must be registered by June 15 for the camp to be conducted.  Those interested in serving on staff need to complete the Adult Volunteer Form (Page 17 of the Guide) and submit it by fax to Jeff Brasher at 205-970-0349.  The Cub Scout Committee will determine the final staff selections.    There will be separate programs for Webelos I and II.  The first-year Webelos will concentrate on Activity Pins while the second-year Webelos will participate in an Outback Adventure concentrating on outdoor and woodcraft skills.  Both programs will be fun, exciting and full of adventure.  There will be lots of good food and activities.  To view the Leader’s Guide, Click Here
 
ON-LINE TRAINING - The BSA's on-line learning center has many training courses for new leaders, and experienced leaders as well.  For example, This Is Scouting (which replaced New Leader Essentials), Fast Start, and Youth Protection Training are all available on-line. These courses are available to everyone (leaders and parents), but you must first have an account on www.myscouting.org to access the training.  For more detailed instructions on how to get trained on-line,  Click Here .
 
CAMP USE PERMITS -  Camp Use Permits are used to notify the council and the camp ranger staff of your unit/group's intent to use camp property, and any special requirements you may have.  They should be submitted at least two weeks prior to arrival at camp to allow the ranger staff sufficient time to schedule necessary maintenance, arrange program items and respond to any specific requests.  One form (Click Here for sample forms) is for Camps Comer, Sequoyah, Jackson and Westmoreland;  a separate form is used for Camp Jack Wright to meet the requirements of Tannehill State Park.

VENTURING OFFICER ASSOCIATION - Make sure your Crew is represented at the Venturing Officers Association meeting the third Sunday afternoon of each month at 2 pm at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Cullman, AL.  Each Crew should be represented by the Crew President and one other crew member of your choice.  
 
LIMITED EDITION CENTENNIAL COUNCIL STRIPSThe silver bordered Centennial Council strips are SOLD OUT.  However there are still plenty of gold and tri-color bordered CSP’s available for purchase.  These make a fantastic gift for your favorite Scout or Scouter.  They are also great “trade” items for events like the National Jamboree, Conclaves, etc.  Make sure you get some today before they are all sold out.  Contact Kieth Wycoff at 205-970-0251 or visit the Clayton Scout Service Center to place your order.

ROUNDTABLE- Please note, the April Roundtable will not be April 1st due to Good Friday and conflicts with the church. April Roundtable will be April 8th at 7pm at Central Baptist in Decatur.  All Troops, Packs and Crews should have a representative at each Roundtable. Roundtables are the first Thursday of every month.

If you are a new Pack/Troop that started in the last couple of weeks, this will not apply to you until the end of 2010.
 
We need your dates for BLUE & GOLD AND COURT OF HONORS- Thank you to Steve Harper for helping contact all Packs about this. Every Pack and Troop should have a yearly Blue and Gold Banquet or Court of Honor. Please contact me with the date, time, and location so that we can have a representative there to share in the fellowship and do a Friends of Scouting Presentation. CULLMAN COUNTY- The Arrowhead District is thrilled to welcome Scouters from Cullman County. We are looking forward to working with you and would like you to sign up for our District e-mail list. DIGITAL EAGLE- Be looking out for info about the new Council Website! It has come to my attention through talking to adults at Day Camp and meetings that many of our volunteers have never heard of the Digital Eagle or our yahoo groups. Help get the word out to your Pack, Troop, or Crew about this beneficial tool. At your next meetings, pass around a sign-up sheet to get people’s email address’s and forward them on to GBeane@1bsa.org or have them go to www.1bsa.org and sign up at the bottom of the webpage.

SPIRIT OF AMERICA: This years Spirit of America Festival will be honoring the Boy Scouts and the 100 year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Please keep this in front of your Unit and consider hosting an activity at the festival on the 4th of July. More information and a sign up sheet is in the works and will be available to the District soon.

Hope everyone had a great Spring Break last week.  Now its time to schedule activities that will take the scouts into the great outdoors and help them advance through the ranks.
 
Save the date:  Thursday, April 1, 2010, District Meeting Night.  The basics of dutch oven cooking will be taught so that we can have dinner available during the District Committee (6p) and Roundtable (7p) meetings.
 
The District Merit badge fair scheduled for Saturday, March 27 at Birmingham-Southern has been cancelled.  At least a dozen Webelos registrations were received by the deadline so we are trying to plan for an alternative activity for them at another time.
 
Join Venture Crew 309 on Saturday, March 27 - 7:30 am to 12:30 pm for a Day of Service with Trinity United Methodist Church of Homewood to benefit Council Elementary School in western Birmingham.  Specific tasks include 1) Mulch yards at Council Elementary School in Ensley and 2) Sort school supplies for Council School at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood.  New Venture Crew 309 targets older special needs scouts- male and female- who want to focus on performing community service.  It is chartered by Better Plumbing & Sewer Service.  For more information contact Crew Advisors Audrey Daigle and  Catherine Clements at 205-401-3292 or cclementsartist@gmail.com.
 
Aloha!  Now is the time for cub scout families to register for Cub Luau scheduled for the weekends of April 16 and April 23.  We want to see your smiling faces at camp.  Each Saturday is jam-packed with fun activities that cub scout families won't want to miss. We have at least two district scouters serving on staff and help from other scouters and older scouts is always appreciated.  Aloha!
 
Plans are in the making for Birmingham District Cub Scout Day Camp June 7-11. The theme this year is "On My Honor".   Camp Director Deborah Hudson is scheduling meetings to talk with scouts and parents about registering for day camp.  If you haven't heard from her then give her a call.  To schedule an information session, register your cub scout or volunteer your time or resources, please contact Deborah Hudson at 205- 981-6473.
 
Now is the time for the boy scouts to register for Summer Camp.  If your merit badge counselor list is limited and you are not attending District Merit Badge Days around the council then three or four years of summer camp is where your scout can earn most of the badges he needs on his Trail to Eagle.  Since our troops are small it would be to our advantage to develop a summer camp plan to share our scouts and resources. If you have a scout who is at least first class, we strongly encourage you to register him for National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) this summer, too.  (Just ask Zavier Mason of Troop 415 about his experience.)   Come to April Roundtable breakout session for boy scouts and let's talk about it.
 
It's not too late for boy scouts to apply to be a member of the GAC Philmont Scoutreach Backpacking Crew scheduled to attend Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico at the end of June.  Little or no backpacking experience is acceptable as long as the scout has a good attitude and good physical conditioning.  Darryl Hinson of Troop 415 is the Adult Crew Advisor.
 
It's also not too late for boy scouts to apply for membership in one the GAC troops bound for the 2010 Centennial National Jamboree at Fort AP Hill, VA scheduled to start in late July.  C. Kent Jackson is the leading one of the Birmingham troops.  He is an ROTC instructor, OA Lodge Advisor, 50+ year scout/scouter and a frequent Jamboree participant and leader.  So your scouts will be in good company with Col. Jackson.  At least one other Birmingham district scouter will be serving on staff this year, too.
 
If anyone in your pack, troop or crew needs Leader Specific Training, contact Yolanda Pleasant, District Training Chair, 205-401-6966, to determine what internet and classroom training courses you need to be considered trained for your registered position.

Do A Good Turn Service Project.   Packs at Hill, Lee, Price, Tuggle, and  Washington Elementary Schools in Birmingham are partnering with Soles4Souls to collect new and gently used shoes for the people of Haiti.  Please help these scouts by dropping off shoes in the collection boxes at one of these schools by March 31, 2010.  Thanks to the Birmingham News and the Birmingham Times for publishing an announcement in support of this scout project.  For more information, contact Mildred "Kidd" Douglass at 205-616-9177. 
 
Please remember to prepare and submit your Advancement Reports to the GAC.  How would you feel if you went a whole year without a raise or bonus or your teacher lost an important paper that made the difference between passing or failing a class or getting a scholarship/internship?  No scout or scouter wants to wear a uniform that has no insignia or patches on it especially when they know they've been active with the unit.  And make it a special occasion for the whole family when you recognize the scouts achievements.

Just a quick one this week to get us caught up.  We continue to get charter paperwork in to the office.  I appreciate your efforts on getting this accomplished but we still have a few charters outstanding.  Let's continue to put forth the great effort that the Cheaha District is known for and get these last few in.  If you need help on getting them completed, please let me know as soon as possible and I will make it a priority to get to you.  Thanks for your continued effort on this.
 
Cub Luau is just around the corner.  I encourage your kids to go and have the time of their lives.  This is very similar to the Cub Scout Haunted except it is warmer and two days instead of one.  Go, have a great time.  Forms for this event can be found at www.1bsa.org under the Cheaha link, forms page.  If you don't offer it to the kids, they can't go.  Offer it and let them decide.
 
Cub Scout Day Camp is gearing up to be another fun year.  Please encourage your kids to sign up now.  Please do not wait as waiting will cost them in the long run.  Register by May 10 and save money.  It will be $65 until then.  After May 10, it will be $90.  I went to both day camps last year and let me say I had a blast.  You will too.  Encourage your kids to go.  Again, offer it and let them decide.  If you don't offer it, they won't know anything about it.  Forms can be found at www.1bsa.org under the Cheaha link, forms page.
 
A big event for the Cheaha District is coming up next month.  It is the Cheaha District Spring Camporee, April 9-11.  This event will be huge.  I promise that you do not want to miss it.  Tom Smith and his group from Munford have been planning this shindig since October of last year.  It is going to be something to behold.  If you don't believe me, go to www.1bsa.org under the Cheaha link and click on the Spring Camporee page.  There you can download the leaders guide, see the patch design, and a list of all of the events that will occur.  This event will be held at Camp Sequoyah and will be great.  If you would, please let Tom know about how many you will have coming to this event.  You will find his contact information on the web-site, Cheaha District.  Cost of the even will be $10.  Even if you can't come for the whole weekend, come for the Saturday events.  It will be worth it.
 
If you haven't planned for summer camp yet, let's get cracking.  Only weeks 4 and 5 are left right now.  I encourage all of you to send your boys.  Speaking from experience, Summer Camp is the best experience a Boy Scout can have.  For more information, shoot me an email or go to www.1bsa.org and look under the summer camp information.
 
Next roundtable will be at Citizen's Hospital in Talladega.  This will be held at 6:30 on April 1st.  For directions and agenda, look on the web-site about 1 week out.
 
One last thing, in case you haven't been to the web-site in a bit, congratulations to Tom Smith for earning his Silver Beaver, Jon Peterson for achieving the Greater Alabama God and Country Award, and for Pack and Troop 4132 out of Munford for winning first place in the Marketing Awards for their scrapebook entries.  These awards were all awarded at the Annual Council Awards Banquet.  Great going guys.

LOCAL BOY SCOUT COMPLETES EAGLE PROJECT

Jalan Simpson of Boy Scout Troop 246 completed his Eagle project on February 27th. His project included cabin restoration in Oak Mountain State Park’s CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Group Camp Area. 
 
In the mid-1930s the CCC introduced the first structures to the park. As was the case in many parks throughout the United States, the CCC placed special attention on quality design, enduring materials and craftsmanship during the construction of these facilities.
 
The CCC Group Camp area is comprised of four unit sites that each include six sleeping cabins, a leader’s cabin, a bathhouse and group lodge as well as support structures. Generally, these areas had been abandoned and not maintained for some years; therefore, Simpson’s project was a welcome renovation for this historic portion of the State Park.
 
Evidence of the work of the CCC era remains throughout the park in rustic structures, foundations, bridges and certain infrastructure. Characterized by stonework quarried from within the Park, these artifacts are reminders of the early camps, pavilions and other park structures placed throughout the park by the CCC. These remaining structures and foundations will serve as a design theme for improvements proposed throughout the park in Oak Mountain’s master plan.
 
Oak Mountain State Park resulted from the State Land Act of 1927, giving the park the first nine hundred forty acres between Double Oak Mountain in the east and Little Oak Ridge in the west. During the 1930’s, the National Park Service acquired approximately eight thousand acres surrounding Oak Mountain State Park. From 1934 through 1937, the CCC developed Peavine Road and the Red Road along with pavilions and cabins. Oak Mountain State Park is the largest of the 24 Alabama State Parks, encompassing approximately 9,000 acres of mountains, lakes and forest.
 
Simpson’s Troop 246 is chartered by True Life Baptist Church in Forestdale, where Daniel Tate serves as Scoutmaster.
 
 
Local Church Hosts Cherokee District Pinewood Derby

            Another exciting day of racing took place Saturday Feb 27th at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. The Cherokee District held their annual Pinewood Derby races for the area Cub Scouts.
            Cubs and their families came from Pack 41 and Pack 45 of Bessemer, Pack 103 of Oak Grove, Pack 120 of Pleasant Grove, Pack 284 of McCalla, Pack 299 of Fairfield and Pack 322 of Hueytown. There were 43 boys from 1st through 5th grade present to race their cars. The individual Packs held their races in January and early February, and the boys then came to compete in the District races.
             
            This year the derby had access to electronic timers provided by Pack 120; and they were needed because of the “Olympic-close” timing. Many of the races were so close it would have required a photo finish to determine the winner. 
            Tiger Cub winners were 1st place Justin Weaver Pack 103, (time of 2.229), 2nd place Sean Bowen Pack 120, (time of 2.251), 3rd place Joseph Summerville Pack 284, (time of 2.341).
            Wolf winners were 1st place Evan Sypeck Pack 41, (time of 2.236), 2nd place Connor Burton Pack 120, (time of 2.286), 3rd place Jeffery Martin Pack 120 (time of 2.296).
            Bear winners were 1st place Reed Pierce Pack 41, (time of 2.183), 2nd place Randy Vanoy Pack 284, (time of 2.209), 3rd place Fisher Hutchins Pack 120, (time of 2.226).
            Webelos I winners were 1st place Benjamin Henderson Pack 284, (time of 2.194), 2nd place Seth Ethridge Pack 322, (time of 2.236), 3rd place Chris Bailey Pack 41, (time of 2.248).
            Webelos II winners were 1st place Conner Collier Pack 322, (time of 2.202), 2nd place Brady Thomas Pack 322, (time of 2.213), 3rd place Tanner Shoults Pack 284, (time of 2.231)
            The overall fastest car of the day belonged to Matthew Hamaker from Pack 322 with a time of 2.167.
            The winner of the “Best Design” was Trevor Howell Pack 284 and for “Most Unique” was Connor Burton Pack 120; the runners up were Joseph Summerville Pack 284, Joseph Norman Pack 41 and Brady Thomas Pack 322.
            Thanks go out to Penny Walker, the Cubmaster from Pack 284, who served as the Pinewood Derby Director, to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church for allowing us to use their facilities, to The Elks Club for providing the trophies for the derby, to Cook Ricci, an Elks member who served as starter and judge, and various scout leaders for stepping up to help.

The Greater Alabama Council held its annual recognition reception and honored some outstanding Scout leaders from the Shelby District.
John Bowers and Paul Mink received the Silver Beaver and A.J. Smith and Joe and Carol Kerr received the Duty to God award. Thanks to all three for your great leadership in making the Shelby District the best in the GAC!
 
We will be recognizing more great Shelby leaders at our district banquet this Thursday. Today is the absolute deadline for registration.
 
Day Camp is on track and we expect around 550 youth to attend. We could still use some adults for both the Cub and Webelos camps. Coosa Lodge Update – Digital Eagle
 
 
 
Coosa Lodge held its 5th Annual American Indian Seminar this last weekend at Camp Comer. We had 275 brothers attend the event and many thanks go out to our Vice Chief of Native American Affairs Jorge Marin and Adviser Mr. Julian Simmons. Mr. Simmons put in a great deal of time and it was reflected in the number of quality classes held. We also had the honor of National Vice Chief of the Order, Will Swingle present to enjoy the festivities. He addressed the gathering at the Arena Show on Saturday evening.
 
Friday evening started of with a Brotherhood Ceremony where eight Arrowmen sealed their bonds of Brotherhood. There was also a Vigil Tap-Out for Abe Rummell, the newest member to the Vigil Class of 2009. The evening concluded with “Open Drumming” for about 2 hours.
 
Saturday was a day full of wonderful Native American related classes. We had seven different types of beading classes; classes on how to dance with instruction on Chicken Dance, Traditional Dance, Old Time Sioux Dance, Fancy Dance, Grass Dance and Straight Dance. In addition there were ceremony classes, judging classes, outfit classes, skinning classes, and a live bird of prey class. After Dinner the Lodge held our Awards Show and bestowed the prestigious Founders Award. The Founders Award demonstrates that in the Arrowmans daily life they have shown the spirit of achievement once described by the founders of the OA, “For he who serves his fellows, is of all his fellows, greatest.”  The 2010 Founders Award went to three Arrowmen; Nathan Hatch; Mr. Tad Thomason and Dr. Bob Oster. Congratulations to each of them for their accomplishments and contributions to the Lodge.
 
After the shows we had a Pow Wow that lasted about two and a half hours. As with tradition each years AIS Patch pictures a Lodge Dancer. This year’s AIS Patch pictured Patrick Hayes as a Straight Dancer. Special thanks goes out to all of our visiting Instructors and Coosa Lodge Arrowmen who assisted with classes. Many of our visitors are listed below. Thanks again for all you do to promote Native American culture.

May 24 – 2nd Coosa Lodge Hawk Day at Camp Westmoreland (Florence, AL)
**Note: The 2010 SR-9 Conclave registration fee is $27 per participant if paid by March 31, 2010. After March 31, 2010, the fee will be $40. A few delegates may be added later, but the last day to add a large number of delegates is April 2nd. This is to allow for proper food purchases.
Hawk Days: Hawk Day is a service workday, similar to Council-organized beaver days. They’re scheduled periodically by the lodge to perform cheerful service for the council or our community. More details (times, tools needed, etc.) will be available soon.
 
OA Unit Election Season is Here!!
Chapter Advisers / Officer, Scoutmasters and Troop O.A. Representatives: From now until April 30th is the Order of the Arrow unit election season. Chapters should be getting their Election Teams together in order to contact Units within their Chapter / District to set up Unit elections. The first Ordeal will be held in May, so it is important that you conduct your elections with a sense of urgency so each newly elected candidate will be afforded the opportunity to attend.

Red Feather Herald Newsletter – “AIS Has Been Mailed!!”
The latest and reinvented edition of the Coosa Lodge “Red Feather Herald” was sent out last week and it looked great! Special thanks to Jacob Murphree, our Newsletter Editor and Mr. Joey Kiker for his input as Adviser. The Newsletter outlined the American Indian Seminar which was held this last weekend. We also had a letter from our Chief Will Cole and Adviser Col. Kent Jackson. 
 
Our next issue will feature information from each Chapter. It is very important that all Chapter Officers and Advisers who have updates for the Newsletter, send these to Jacob Murphree at Oldstyler304@yahoo.com . We want to spotlight happenings in each of our Chapters and the timely submission of updates will be helpful. To present date we have had limited feedback from our Chapters on this. 
Advisers, please remember that it is a requirement that members of a Chapter must submit at least 2 articles to qualify for the Quality Chapter Award and one of the submissions must be from a youth member of the Chapter. Please contact your Chapter Chiefs and get this information to us.
