STEM / Nova Awards Ideas-

While having your summer fun, have some fun with Science.  Find opportunities to explore nature using Science.  Do crickets chirp faster when colder or warmer?  Do the fish like warmer or colder water?  Think about it and write down what you think.  Then do an experiment and check your idea.  Where can you find the warmer or colder water?  Are there more fish there?

When you get out of the pool or the lake, why are you colder?  Why do you perspire when you are hot?  Dogs don’t perspire – how do they cool off?  Is it hotter or colder after an afternoon rainstorm?  What is the difference between cooling you by evaporation and cooling the earth by evaporation?
While you’re out having summer fun, find an interesting question.  Think about what you think is a good explanation.  Then make observations and check your explanation.  Maybe you were right.  Maybe you learned something while out having summer fun.

Philmont Training Center 2014 Courses:

The Philmont Training Center (PTC) is the only national volunteer training center for the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1950, PTC has provided a unique environment for training volunteer and professional leaders, and a fun family program for every member of the family. Each year, more than 6,000 Scouters and family members attend PTC.

Each conference features the latest tools and techniques, audiovisuals, discussions, idea sharing, and activities led by a faculty of experienced Scouters. All registered Scouters are invited to attend training center courses.

What is NYLT? 
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a six-day outdoor training course
for senior youth leaders in the Boy Scouting or the Venturing programs. Three different NYLT
Sessions are being offered by the Greater Alabama Council in 2014: the Winter NYLT Course, the
Spring NYLT Course and the Summer NYLT Course. The Winter Course will be conducted over
two three day weekends, 18-20 January 2014 & 14-17 February 2014. The Spring and Summer NYLT Courses will be conducted as a week long course and will be offered on 1 – 7 June 2014 or 6-12 July 2014. NYLT augments the training received from Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) or the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC). NYLT focuses on the skills needed by Senior Patrol Leaders, Patrol Leaders, Presidents and Boatswains. The course is led by a volunteer staff of youth and adults experienced in training youth leaders.

BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. It’s designed to introduce Cub Scout leaders to the newly expanded opportunities for pack overnight camping.

This is an energetic training that will cover everything you need to know to plan and run a pack overnighter. It’s more than just camping—it includes ideas for outdoor activities, games and ceremonies; information on selecting and using camping equipment; how to run a campfire program; and hands-on Cub Scout cooking demonstrations! In short, everything you need to know to make your pack overnighter a fun, successful event! 
Who needs BALOO?
At least one adult on a pack overnighter must have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation to properly understand the importance of program intent, youth protection guidelines, health and safety, site selection, age-appropriate activities, and sufficient adult participation. All adult Cub Scouters can use the information and skills they’ll gain from BALOO.

Friday, July 25th
Pelham Civic Complex 

Skate your way to fun and excitement this summer and join us at the Pelham Civic Center Ice Rink on Friday, July 25th for an ice skating ad- venture. We will have two sessions of ice skating from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. From 6:00-7:00 p.m. both sessions will enjoy a MAGIC SHOW, movies and fresh baked cookies. Session One registra- tion will start at 3:30 p.m. and will finish at 7:00 p.m. while Session Two registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and will conclude at 9:00 p.m. To sign up for a single session is $30 but if you want to come to both sessions we are offering a discounted combo price of $50 per person. The time for unit elections is coming up quickly! Many units hold their elections between February and April so their candidates can participate in the May Ordeal or be called out at Summer Camp. If your unit would like to hold an Order of the Arrow election, we'll be more than happy to send a trained, friendly election team to you to conduct the election and process the paperwork. We're launching our history project for the Order of the Arrow centennial celebration next year, and we need you're help! Project adviser Chris Brightwell is gearing up to film a documentary and pen an extensive historical reference that spans the entire 85 years of the the Order's service to Scouting in North Alabama. It'll reach back to the founding of Cherokee Fifty in 1930, advance through the birth of Achunanchi and Kaskanampo lodges, celebrate the unification of those lodges in to Coosa Lodge, and maybe try to paint a picture of what our future might look like.

We're planning to take 200 Coosa Lodge members to the 2015 National Order of the Arrow Conference to celebrate the Order's centennial, meet Arrowmen from throughout the Order, learn the most effective ways to improve our lodge program and maximize its impact, and much, much more. We'll have more info on this as the year progresses, but you should just go ahead and plan to be with usAugust 3-8, 2015 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.  Day Camp 

Arrowhead held to excellent Cub Scout Day Camps this month.  Close to 100 Scouts came out and enjoyed our action packed camps.  Activities included BB guns, archery, crafts, games and much more.  A big thank you to our Camp Directors, Program Directors and their wonderful volunteer staffs that made both camps possible.

As the summer coming to a close, we’re now gearing up for the fall, and our School Night for Scouting team has been hard at work making sure we offer all we can to you, the leaders, for your School Night efforts.  To help in this, The Birmingham District will be hosting a School Night for Scouting Training to make sure we cover all of our bases, and roll out the plan as clearly as possible for you.  Trainings is open to all Pack leadership, especially those Packs who recruit from Schools in the area. This is a free, two hour required training session for anyone currently serving in a Scouting unit or anyone interested in becoming a leader. The only requirement to attend is that you go online to, register with a new account, if you do not have one, and complete Youth Protection Training and This Is Scouting. Please bring the completion documentation with you to training. You will be asked to print a copy of your completion certificate once you finish the 30 minute sessions.

Hello Everyone,

This year we will concentrate on recruiting all year long in order to offer our program to as many youth as possible. We will also be offering new and unique program opportunities. 

Rechartering process is underway, and I will be keeping you updated on our progress through the next 2 months. If you have an issues what so ever with your charter please give me a call and I will be happy to assist you with your problem. Please be sure to get these in on time, and complete.

Program Preview Conference is set for this Thursday May, 1st at 7:00 p.m. at the Talladega Scout Hut. We will have hotdogs and drinks there. Please stop by since we will be covering all the upcoming events for this coming Fall. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

We will also be looking to create a new spring event for our spring recruiting purposes, pleas stay tuned for info on that. We have been working on a small fishing derby just for our Cub Scouts in Cheaha District, there will be more info to follow on this event in the next couple of weeks.

Please start signing up for our Cheaha Day Camp, this year we are partnering with our neighbors Choccolocco in order to provide a top notch experience for Day Camp. We are looking to welcome 150 scouts to this event that will be held in 3 separate locations over 3 days. June 9th will be held at Anniston Museum of Natural History,June 11th will be at Shocco Springs here in Talladega, and June 13thwill be at Camp Lee in Oxford. We are still working out all the kinks, but Transportation will be provided for the outlying areas to make the process as easy to attend as possible. The early bird price for this event is $75 sign up now and enjoy our payment plan, just send what you can now and be billed what works for you until the event. We are very excited and hope you will join us for what is sure to be a top notch experience.

Hello Cherokee District,

What a great week of Day Camp! Thank you to all of the members of the Planning Committee and Camp Staff who made this possible. Cherokee had a growth in attendance this year and it was due to your dedication. Thank You! Keep in mind that next year’s theme will be the Wild West. 

Please remember that Roundtable will not be held in July, as it is during the week of the 4th, and we will be having a School Night for Scouting Training that month (please see upcoming events below).

Members of our District Committee send out regular group emails about upcoming events and meetings. If you are not receiving these emails, please contact me at and I will make sure your email address is added.

Please remember that our District Popcorn Kick-Off will take place at August Roundtable. Our District Popcorn Kernel is working hard to prepare for this event.  You can assist her by recruiting someone from your Pack or Troop to be the Unit Popcorn Kernel. This person should attend the Popcorn Kick-off and will keep the lines of communication open between your unit and the District Popcorn Kernel. Please send me the name of your Unit Popcorn Kernel by July 31st.

We will have two NEW UNIT LEADER TRAININGS: one in September and one in October. The details of these events will be communicated by the end of June. We encourage you to attend along with each of your leaders, and especially anyone that completes a new leader application.  Our goal is to make sure that every new adult is given the best possible start to their Scouting “Career” and to provide the best possible program for the youth.

Did you know that Cub Leaders can do all their training online?!  The courses offered online are: Youth Protection, Fast Start, Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training, and This is Scouting. Now, den
leaders and assistants, Cubmasters and assistants, pack trainers, and pack committee chairs and members can now learn the how-to’s for successfully conducting an engaging den and pack program and can become confident in the role each plays. Day Camp will be here before you know it. We're doing something very exciting this year, a traveling day camp at three different locations for three days. Day one will be at the Anniston Museum of Natural History, there will be a live animal show and a lot of cool scientific stuff. Day two will be at Shocco Springs, where the McWane Center will bring their mobile show and we'll get to swim and shoot BB guns and do archery. Day three will be at Camp Lee, where we'll get to swim in the lake and have a family picnic, including the awards ceremony. Online registration will be up soon, and if you want to make payments, get in touch with me. It's June 9, 11, and 13. There will be transportation provided. And, be thinking ahead to this fall and our Council Encampment, ScoutFest 2014. It will be at Point Mallard in Decatur, a beautiful location. There will be a concert, lots of cool activities, and thousands of your closest Scouting friends. It's going to be awesome. And Cub Scouts can camp, too. The price for the weekend is going to be $40 and that will include your meals. Online registration will begin May 1, so be looking for that email.

WE HAVE BOY SCOUT PACKETS this year, as well as posters and fliers for the high schools for Venturing and Boy Scouts!!

Please keep our Boy Scout troops in your thoughts as they travel to different camps.    Over the next six weeks our troops will be attending summer camp somewhere in the South.  Some are in Council, some are at the High Adventure Bases and some are out of Council.


The 2014 Webelos Resident Camp is four days and three nights of Scouting fun and adventure! The goal of Resident Camp is to provide Webelos Scouts a taste of the summer camp excitement they will enjoy when they become Boy Scouts, and to offer the opportunity to complete some, if not all, of the requirements for select Webelos Activity Pins. The Webelos Resident Camp is held at Comer Scout Reservation and is led by trained Webelos leaders and assisted by staff members from the Greater Alabama Council Boy Scout Summer Camp.  Please visit the Greater Alabama Council Website for more information.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new District Executive, Quentin Horton. Quentin is 

an Eagle Scout from Troop 102 in Huntsville, AL and graduated from Alabama A&M University 

with a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Planning and Urban Studies with a minor in 

Criminal Justice. Quentin has a background in nonprofit work with AmeriCorps VISTA. 

Quentin most recently worked for a Mental Health Center in Madison County. We welcome 

Quentin to Three Rivers District and look forward to working with him in his new position. 

We are also proud to announce that Jay Elliott has been promoted and reassigned as Shelby 

District Executive. We are sad that we are losing Jay, because he has been such an asset to our 

District in his brief tour of duty here, and our loss is Shelby District’s gain. We will miss Jay,

I want to thank all of the volunteers who made The Vulcan District Day Camp a Great Week for all the Cubs.  We had presentation on Edible Plants from our Scout Executive, JT Dabbs, a presentation on Reptiles (snakes) at the Wildlife Center, Science Experiments from the McWane Center, and Predatory Bird demonstration. Put that together with Science, Nature, Field Sports, BB guns, Bows & Arrows, Slingshots, Kool Crafts, and Friday water fun and water rockets, and you have a great week.

September 13, 2014, Canterbury United Methodist Church. A list of Merit Badges being offered and the Registration will be available by mid-July, so watch the District Website.  Keep in mind that walk in registration the day of the event is not allowed. The Vulcan District Advance-O-Rama is sponsored by the Vulcan District, Greater Alabama Council. All registered Boy Scouts are welcome to participate regardless of Council or District. The registration fee is $12.00 per Scout which includes lunch. Additional activity fees may be required for the individual class. Registration is by Troop only. Individual scouts should register through their Troop and one Troop representative should handle website registration and troop payment. Each Troop is required to designate a registered adult leader responsible for the Troop on the day of the event. Class confirmations, changes, and questions will be conducted at the Help Desk prior to orientation; from8:15 – 9:00. Signs will direct you to the Help Desk

Saturday, June 28th, and Saturday, July 19th. Time: 4pm to 10pm. Cost for Scouts attending in uniform is $7.00, half the cost of normal registration. A Telescope will be given as a Door Prize at each session.  Go to the BAS website to register and for further information.

September 13, at the Sixth Street Baptist Church, the Birmingham District is offering Cub Scout Leader Training.  Check in at 8am, with the classes starting at 9.  Completion online of Youth Protection Training and This is Scouting is required, bring certification with you for verification.  Registration and flyer will be up soon at the Birmingham District Website:

Dates are being set with the area Schools for fall recruiting.  School Night for Scouting Training is Thursday, July 31st, at the Scout Office.

The Greater Alabama Council is thrilled to announce that we are adding a 6th week at Camp Sequoayh designed specifically for those Scouts that want to experience more summer camp. Scouts register to attend as individuals instead of with a troop. No adult leaders are required. The Camp Sequoyah Staff will provide instruction and be your Scout leader for the week. Each Scout will be assigned a campsite and adult staff members will provide leadership. Scouts can then focus their attention on merit badges and activities they really enjoyed or did not get to do during regular summer camp. For more information, go to:
Currently, almost all the pins for units in the Vulcan District are generic, or inactive.  The Key 3 for every unit in Vulcan District needs to go to, and update their unit’s contact information.  
Each unit can list 2 contacts, their website, facebook, give special announcements (like when is their school night or what school they recruit from), meeting times, and if the unit meets at a different location then the chartering organization they can put that there.  The unit can even have a different logo if they would like.

What is a Webelos Resident Camp? 
Webelos Resident Camp is four days and three nights of Scouting fun and adventure at Camp Comer! It provides Webelos Scouts a taste of the summer camp excitement they will enjoy when they become Boy Scouts, and to offer the opportunity to complete some, if not all, of the requirements for select Webelos Activity Pins. 
Who can attend? 
Resident Camp is open to all boys currently registered as Bears (rising Webelos I Scouts) or Webelos I Scouts (rising second-year Webelos). If you are going into the 4th or 5th grade, this is for you.
How much does it cost? 
The cost for each Scout to attend is $135.00. The first adult leader is free with a minimum of 4 registered Webelos from your unit. The fee for each additional adult leader is $55.00. Payment of all fees must be submitted along with the Webelos Resident Camp Registration Form. All registration forms, rosters and fees must be submitted to the Council no later than July 7, 2014
What will the Webelos do at camp? 
Webelos Scouts attending the Webelos Resident Camp will be exposed to a wide range of activities for completion of activity pins. Webelos I Activity Pin programs may include Aquanaut, Naturalist, Geologist, Forester, Engineer, Scientist, Sportsman, Showman, or Artist. Webelos II Activity Pin programs may include Aquanaut, Outdoorsman, or Handyman. Activity Pins offered at the 2014 Webelos Resident Camp are subject to change, depending on course demand, volunteer staffing, and weather.

We will be having a School Night for Scouting Training on Thursday, July 31, at 6:30PM. We will need a representative from each Cub Scout Pack to attend this training. With school starting back earlier this year we need to go ahead and start planning for our Fall Recruiting efforts ASAP. Please start looking at your unit's calendars and have several dates in mind for our in-school boy talks. 

Our August Roundtable will be on Thursday, August 7, 6:30PM at Florence Boulevard Church of Christ and we will be having our annual Popcorn Kickoff. We will be going over all of the latest news for popcorn for the fall. We will also will be going over all of our upcoming Fall Activities to continue to help you plan your unit's calendars.

send me your photos!

Each Scout should email the Eagle Board at This email address will deliver his

To schedule a Project Review or Eagle Board, the Scout should tell the Board their Name, Troop #, Email address and
Phone number that they may be reached at. Also, state if it is a Project Review or Eagle Board and give a brief
description of the proposed or approved Project including the Sponsor's Name and the physical work Location.
All requests are due by the Friday (at 5:00 P.M.) prior to the firstThursday of the month (Roundtable night). A Board
Member will send the Eagle Board's Monthly Schedule out by theMonday night prior to Roundtable. The Schedule will
be sent to each Scout, his Scoutmaster, the D.E., Roundtable Chair and Eagle Board.
